Life Coaching VS Therapists
I came across a coaching client keen to work with a life coach to transform herself from the present trauma and grief of a past event. When I started working with her, I didn’t continue but referred her to a therapist and explained why she needed a therapist, not a Life Coach.
Therapists analyze their client’s past as a tool for
understanding present behaviors. While Life coaches identify and describe
current problematic behaviors so the client can work to modify them.
Therapists focus on ‘why’ certain behavioral patterns occur,
and coaches work on ‘how’ to work toward a goal.
I consider myself a wellness professional and, as a life
coach, aid clients in improving their relationships, careers, and day-to-day
lives.
People turn to Life coaches for help in the following broad
symptoms
ü
Frequent irritability
ü
High levels of stress and/or anxiety
ü
Inability to break bad habits
ü
Persistent feelings of dissatisfaction at work
ü
Sense of blocked creativity
Many clients who are referred mainly expect me to bridge the
gap between current circumstances and the life they like to lead. The benefits
they have attained through a series of coaching sessions can be summarized as
ü
Better Work/Life Balance
ü
Elimination of long-held fears and anxieties
ü
Enhanced creativity
ü
Greater financial security
ü
Improved communication skills
ü
More satisfying work life
ü
Stronger relationships with family and friends
These are some of few feedback I have received from the
clients.
If you are thinking of working with a life coach, keep in
mind that it’s up to you to decide what you would like to focus on in your
coaching sessions.
