IMMUNITY TO CHANGE BY ROBERT KEGAN AND LISA LAHEY – BOOK REVIEW According to a recent study, when doctors tell heart patients they may die if they do not change their habits, only one in seven will succeed in changing their habits. Desire and motivation are insufficient: even when it's literally a question of life and death, the power to change remains enigmatic. Given the power of the status quo, how can we transform ourselves and our organizations? In their book "Immunity to Change," writers Robert Kegan and Lisa Lahey demonstrate how our individual ideas, along with the collective mindsets of our organizations, produce a natural but powerful immunity to change. Kegan and Lahey provide us with the keys to unleash our potential and ultimately go forward by showing how this mechanism holds us back. And by identifying and removing our personal resistance to change, we can propel our organizations forward as well. This engaging and practical book, full of hands-on dia...

I use visualization techniques successfully with my coaching clients when they procrastinate and do not focus on what is next in their life/careers. Brain studies now reveal that thoughts produce the exact mental instructions as actions. So, the brain is getting trained for actual performance during ‘Visualizations.’ It has been found that mental practices can enhance motivation, increase confidence and self-efficacy, and prime your brain for success. How to implement the Visualization technique ΓΌ Close your eyes ΓΌ Get yourself in a positive situation you are going to be in by creating a mental picture of it ΓΌ Engage as many senses as possible ΓΌ Make it as realistic as possible: Who is there? How do you feel? What do you smell, hear, and feel? ΓΌ Now, keep replaying it over and over. Feel and experience yourself doing it correctly repeatedly ΓΌ Perform this practice often. You can even perform it alongside meditation if you ...

I am sharing my experience with one of my coaching clients who wanted to work on her future career. She cannot decide which route to take, either corporate or research in academia. When we are about to conclude, she will revisit using the word ‘but’ and get confused. I learned in this conversation that it’s not that she cannot make up her mind, but negative thoughts are her barrier. We started working on that and ended up successful. I am sharing the techniques used to create her awareness about the situation and develop an action plan. Your thoughts will influence your words, which determines your actions. Your actions will define the habits which make up your character. Your character will determine your destiny. Learn to master your thoughts. While unpleasant or undesired ideas are frequent, they can hinder you from enjoying situations, divert your attention away from what is truly important, and drain your vitality. Additionally, they can make you feel worried and ...
Life Coaching VS Therapists

I came across a coaching client keen to work with a life coach to transform herself from the present trauma and grief of a past event. When I started working with her, I didn’t continue but referred her to a therapist and explained why she needed a therapist, not a Life Coach. Therapists analyze their client’s past as a tool for understanding present behaviors. While Life coaches identify and describe current problematic behaviors so the client can work to modify them. Therapists focus on ‘why’ certain behavioral patterns occur, and coaches work on ‘how’ to work toward a goal. I consider myself a wellness professional and, as a life coach, aid clients in improving their relationships, careers, and day-to-day lives. People turn to Life coaches for help in the following broad symptoms ΓΌ Frequent irritability ΓΌ High levels of stress and/or anxiety ΓΌ Inability to break bad habits ΓΌ Persistent feelings of dissatisfaction at work ΓΌ ...
